SLAVERY The content we will cover this week is the most difficult for me to teach, but possibly the most important. In order to understand why our country divided and went to war, we must fully explore the issue of slavery. In my opinion, the best way to do that is through primary sources. It will be difficult to see and read about the violence and dehumanization done to the slaves, and if at any time you feel uncomfortable, you are welcome to slip out and go to Mrs. Pearson's room.
MONDAY We will begin our journey by watching the trailer for 12 Years a Slave, reading excerpts from Solomon Northrup's autobiography and watching portions of HBO's Slave Narratives. The HBO Slave Narratives, "Unchained Memories," is a powerful documentary. In the 1930s, President Roosevelt sent people out to interview the last living slaves. Their stories were recorded on records and then transcribed. HBO chose some of those accounts and asked black actors to read them in character so that we could hear the voices of the former slaves recount their experiences. It is difficult to watch, but so powerful to hear their stories.

|
TUESDAY We'll finish watching HBO's Slave Narratives and read several of the laws passed in southern states that required violence to slaves. Then we'll read some first-hand accounts of the brutality of slavery from Theodore Weld's book, American Slavery as It Is. Tonight you will write a short argument using evidence from your primary sources as well as a reflection paragraph.
WEDNESDAY We'll begin watching an edited version of the movie 12 Years A Slave. You will take notes for the essay that you'll write tomorrow night.
THURSDAY We'll continue watching 12 Years A Slave. For homework, you will write an essay describing how the movie portrayed the treatment of slaves in the South

MONDAY We'll use the Chrome Books to learn about the challenges faced by the pioneers who headed west in wagon trains. You'll use those notes tonight to write a narrative poem as someone who traveled west. Include LOTS of details from your notes and TONS of descriptive words and phrases.
Below is an example of a poem that a student wrote a few years ago. It happens to rhyme, but rhyming is optional.
The West by Erik H.
As a mother calls to her child,
So the West has called to me.
The poorer challenge the mountains,
The richer travel the sea.
I packed my bags and headed west,
To follow yonder trail.
Sickness and death shall assault me
And plague me ‘till I fail.
Rattlers and Indians bar the way,
They’ll try to stop me too.
I love this country sea to sea,
The red, the white, and the blue.
TUESDAY Today we'll use the Chrome Books again to learn about the Mormons and their journey west. Use your Westward Movement Test Review to study for your test on THURSDAY.

You should have LOTS of details from your textbook notes, TONS of descriptive words and phrases and it should sound like it's coming from the point of view of your chosen character.
Hook Examples
James K. Polk: Today marks the pinnacle of my political career.
General Santa Anna: I am seething with rage over the audacity of our greedy American neighbors.
Mexican Soldier: It all started when America's president, James K. Polk, looked westward to our lands with greed in his eyes.
U.S. Soldier: Being an American soldier has always been a source of pride for me, until now.
THURSDAY You'll use your Textbook Notes 15.4 Texas and Textbook Notes 15.6 War with Mexico to analyze and determine the most important information from each. You'll take the eight most important facts and put them in chronological order on your flow maps.
FRIDAY Yee haw for the Gold Rush!!! We'll watch portions of the PBS documentary on the Gold Rush and take notes. According to the Smithsonian, $1 during the Gold Rush would be worth $30 today. Keep that in mind when you hear facts like, "Merchants sold eggs for $1 each." That would be a $30 egg today!!!

Monday, February 1, 2016 INDIAN REMOVAL ACT This week and next week we are focusing on the presidency of Andrew Jackson. There were many controversial aspects to his administration, the most controversial of which was the Indian Removal Act. Though determined to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, this law forced all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River to leave their homes and move west of the river. COMMON CORE WRITING STANDARD For our brief unit on Andrew Jackson we will continue our focus on Common Core Writing Standard 3: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. |
MONDAY Our historical investigative question for our Cherokee Removal Argument Essay is: "By 1838, which would have been better for the Cherokee Indians: to accept or to continue to resist the U.S. government’s demand they move to new tribal lands west of the Mississippi River?" Today we will read background information on the Cherokee Removal and evaluate 10 primary and secondary sources. Your job is to evaluate the evidence and put it on the appropriate side of your Evidence Chart. Be sure to record your source # and a warrant (if you can think of one).
TUESDAY You'll share your Evidence Chart with your team and make any necessary adjustments before tackling your Argument Essay Template. Remember, choosing strong evidence is the most important part of writing a winning argument essay.
WEDNESDAY You'll write paragraphs 1-3 of your Cherokee Removal Argument Essay. Be sure to explain your evidence to your reader with strong warrants.
THURSDAY You'll write paragraphs 4-6. Be sure to use your "Counter-Claim Sentence Frames" handout to help you write your 5th paragraph.
FRIDAY We'll read our essays to a partner and highlight what we deserve for each portion on our Argument Rubrics.

ACE Elective (Ancient Civilizations Exploration)
Today, in our 6th grade ACE elective, we tackled Social Studies Standard 6.2.5, which focuses on the architecture of ancient Egypt. Each team built an Egyptian pyramid, which had directions, and a temple, which only had a picture. Way to go figuring out the puzzles, future architects and engineers!

Wow!!! I'm so impressed with the Bubble Maps and Double Bubble that we made together! Remember, adjectives can create a vivid picture in your reader's mind. Work on including precise adjectives in your writing so that you can say what you mean quickly and clearly. Your Double Bubble is an excellent synopsis of Hamilton & Jefferson. You'll use it to study for your New Nation Test in a couple of weeks.

This week we'll continue learning about the rocky road that our nation traveled in its early years.
MONDAY & TUESDAY We'll use the Chrome Books to complete the Curriculum Pathways lesson on "Early Foreign Policy." I love the lessons on this website because they are similar to what you have to do on SBAC so it's good practice. Not to mention that there's a ton of great information presented in an interactive format :). It's a win-win!

WEDNESDAY We'll make a Brace Map to figure out who was in George Washington's first cabinet and then learn all about Alexander Hamilton. He was super interesting and lived during this time period. He even made it onto our $10 bill! Hamilton could have had his own reality show if they'd had TV back then :). Proof of that is the new Hamilton show on Broadway that presents his life in RAP. We'll find out about his early life and political career by reading a section of Ch 11 and filling in our Hamilton & Jefferson Textbook Notes (just the front side on Hamilton).
THURSDAY We'll complete an Alexander Hamilton Bubble Map to make sure we understand exactly who he was and how he thought the nation should be run. Then we'll learn about Thomas Jefferson by reading a section of Ch 11 and completing our Textbook Notes on him.
FRIDAY We'll compare and contrast Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. These two did not like each other and made George Washington's life difficult when they were both in his cabinet. We'll complete Thomas Jefferson's Bubble Map and then do a Double Bubble to compare and contrast these two important leaders.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Conferences start this Friday and will be held in the gym. There is no school on Friday because we will have conferences all day. Next week school will dismiss at 1:30pm every day and conferences will be held in the gym from 1:45pm-3pm. Please come with your parents on whatever day works best for you and bring your planner :).
Ciao for now!

EXPLORATION This week we'll finish up our unit on Exploration...yea! Watch out, there be pirates about, matey! One might even show up in our classroom :). We'll review what you learned last year about what motivated the explorers to face the dangers of the high seas and then focus on the impact that exploration had on both the Europeans and Native Americans.
EXPLORER CARTOON Tomorrow you will choose an explorer to learn about, draw about, and write about. I have some samples posted in the slide show below. Make it amazing and it'll go up on the wall and earn you a rock star sticker!
EXPLORATION REVIEW & TEST On Wednesday, we will play our review game and on Thursday we will take our first unit test for the year. Be sure to study the pages on your Exploration Review to get ready!
EXPLORATION NOTEBOOK On Friday you will turn in your Exploration Notebook for it to be evaluated. That means that you will turn in your completed Table of Contents and all of the pages listed on it. Be sure to have all of your assignments completed and in order according to the TOC with page numbers in the bottom-middle. This is worth 25 points and the goal is to help you with organization.
ASSIGNMENTS & WEBSITES Keep in mind that you can download all the handouts given in class on the current unit's Assignments page. For instance, right now all of our assignments and the Table of Contents are located on the Exploration Assignments page, which you can get to by clicking on the 8th Grade Units tab on the menu. You can also check out the cool websites, games, information and videos on the Exploration Websites page.
PARENT PORTAL If you haven't had a chance to set up an account on the Parent Portal at http://ewcsd.org/parents/, please do so as soon as possible. When I update student grades each week I send a Teleparent message notifying you that it's time to check those grades online. If you need help, you can stop by the office to get your code and parents can stop in room 1 to get help on setting up your account.
TELEPARENT & REMIND If you haven't received Teleparent messages, please contact the office and give them the phone number at which you would like to receive the messages. If you'd like to sign up for Remind text messages, which are much more informative than the Teleparent messages, see the instructions in the August 30, 2014 News Flash below.

COMMON CORE STANDARDS Our writing focus for our Exploration unit is on informative/explanatory texts: CCWHST 2 Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.
EXPLANATORY TEXT On Friday we learned the Expository Text Chant. We'll practice it this week and take a quiz on it Friday. Our goal by the end of our Exploration Unit is to make sure that we can write rock solid explanatory paragraphs based on information we've read or seen in film. Remember, as UCLA basketball coach John Wooden said, "When you improve a little each day, eventually big things occur...Don't look for the quick, big improvement. Seek the small improvement one day at a time. That's the only way it happens--and when it happens, it lasts."
HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 2 HOURS This week we will watch 40 minutes of the documentary "History of the World in 2 Hours." This film provides a great overview of ancient history, which you learned in 6th grade, medieval history, which you learned in 7th grade, and modern history, which we will focus on this year. Each day we will have an essential question, take notes on the movie that will help us answer that question, and answer the question by writing an explanatory text paragraph for homework using our notes. If you miss one day of class, be sure to watch the portion you missed online by clicking on this link History of the World in 2 Hours.

It's been a wonderful first two days with you. I can already tell that you are a great group of students and that we're going to have a wonderful year together!
As we talked about in class, research shows that the better a teacher knows his or her students, the higher those students will achieve academically. I made a list of questions on the Important Information for Mrs. Redd that will help me get to know you more quickly. You don't have to answer in complete sentences, but please give me as much information and detail as possible so that I have a clear picture of who you are.
Remember to sign up for Remind by the end of the day tomorrow in order to get extra credit. You can have up to three people (preferably you, your mom, and dad :) signed up with your name and receive 5 points of extra credit for each.
